- Types of drone
Drone is essentially a machine with ability to fly without human presence inside the vehicle as pilot. Technically it is controlled by computers or remote controls. Classification of drone is generally based on size and ranges. Previously, drone was aimed to serve military operation and as demand increased to market it commercially, non military drone has been increasingly manufactured. Following are some classification of drones according to size and performance, however, some people feel more convenient to classify drone based on the price.
Based on size we can classify drone as very small, mini, medium and large drones. A very small drone has about 50cm in length and actually we can divide it into two forms: Nano/Micro Drone and Mini Drone. Nano drones are designed in form to mimic insects with very small flapping wings. It is perfect for spy or war operation. Next is mini drone with 50 cm in length designed with fixed wings.
Next, medium drones have bigger shape than the former group where it is able to carry weights up to 200Kgs. It has fixed wing model. The last is large drone with size of small aircrafts and most commonly found in military base. As we know that the large drone is used for operation in remote location where sending human inside the vehicle is considered as very dangerous.
Second category is based on performance. According to US Military, drones can be divided into very close range, close range, short range, mid range, and endurance drones. Each of them is dedicated for special purpose. For example, very close range drones are usually used as toys with ranges about 6 km and battery life for fly time around 20-56 minutes. Endurance drones are the best type of all drones with maximum flight time of 36 hours. Since its capability reaching to a height of 30,000 ft above sea level this endurance drone is usually used for high end surveillance.
